A SHORT HISTORY Basically, Cloud Strife started out as a wimpy little mountain kid with no friends. He joined the Shinra army in hopes of becoming a SOLDIER, but when that fell through he was devastated and lost all confidence in himself. He served two years and got caught into some nasty trouble, ending up as an experiment that left him comatose for another year, and dragged around by his best friend Zack. Zack was killed, and Cloud’s head was so messed up that he stole parts of Zack’s life and identity and filled in some holes, so that his stint as a trooper and the torture they both endured at the hands of Hojo never happened. As Cloud progresses along his journal to defeat Sephiroth, the one responsible for the death of his hometown and the guy making life generally uncomfortable for everyone, Cloud has these strange flashes of insight or blackouts. Holes wide enough to pass an airship through are poked into his past and his recollection of the events in Nibelheim, until it all comes crashing down around his ears and he slowly curls into himself, seriously effed up in the head. It takes a brief stint in the actual Lifestream (and Tifa’s help) for Cloud to put his real memories back together. After that the party heads off, and Sephiroth is ultimately defeated and Cloud recognizes himself. Apparently this does not apply to movie-verse, because come Advent Children (which takes place two years after the end of Final Fantasy VII) Cloud is an emo bucket. He has Geostigma and is a semi-dad to a kid named Denzel. Three Sephiroth clones appear out of nowhere and randomly terrorize Rufus (who ducked to survive the attack from Diamond WEAPON) and the Turks until they get Jenova’s head. More random battles occur, Cloud fights Kadaj and wins, Kadaj absorbs Jenova’s cells and becomes Sephiroth somehow. Sephiroth and Cloud fight, Cloud ultimately wins. Cloud stops being an emo bucket. The end. PERSONALITY Cloud Strife is difficult to explain in that a good portion of his personality is “borrowed” from Zack. He’s naturally a quiet and withdrawn individual; he occasionally suffers from the belief that it would be better not to bother someone with his own troubles and run from confrontation, rather than to face it head on. This can lead people to believe that he’s cold and uncaring, when it’s the exact opposite that’s true. He’s unsure of his actions, can be horribly insecure and second-guesses a lot of his decisions, occasionally backing out or giving up when he thinks he can’t do something. However, there’s also a side of Cloud that acts like the strong and capable individual he always wanted to be. He’s determined (read: stubborn), strong, steadfast, focused and pretty good leader material. He can get discouraged easily, but there are times when Cloud pushes onward despite any hardships that come along and attempt to stall him, so Cloud has a quiet strength of his own. He’s certainly not helpless, and even if he does become downtrodden, he doesn’t like to complain, preferring to keep his troubles (and his past) to himself. This does make it difficult to get to know him sometimes, but once he considers someone a friend, he’ll do anything in his power to protect them. This isn’t to say that he’s a total emo, srs business kind of guy. Cloud has a very dry sense of humor, and once he’s comfortable with the people and situation he’s in, he can even crack a few jokes. Really, it’s just time he needs to muscle his way past the initial “I am a willing recluse,” response; he’s perfectly amiable after that.
